Syllabus UG (NEP)

This is the Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) NEP-2020 for BA English Literature 2024–28. The full structure decoded so it’s easy to understand:

1. What do the codes mean?

Code Type         Full Form                Purpose
DSC        Discipline Specific Core        Compulsory core papers. You must study DSC-01 to DSC-08. These form the backbone of English Lit.
DSE        Discipline Specific Elective        Choose from DSE-01 to DSE-12. These are specialization papers. You’ll pick a few based on your interest.
AEC        Ability Enhancement Course        Compulsory skill-based papers. ENAEC-02 & ENAEC-04 focus on English language & communication.
ENSEC        Skill Enhancement Course        ENSEC-01 Creative Writing – practical skill paper.
ENVAC        Value Added Course        ENVAC-01 Emotional Intelligence – for life skills/values.
ENGE        Generic Elective        ENGE-01 & ENGE-02 – For students from other disciplines who take English as minor.


2. Year-wise Breakdown of Core Papers: DSC-01 to DSC-08

Based on standard NEP structure :

Year 1: 2024–25  
- DSC-01: Introduction to the Study of English Literature – What is literature, genres, literary terms.  
- DSC-02: History of English Literature – Chaucer to 21st Century overview.

Year 2: 2025–26  
- DSC-03: Indian Writings in English – R.K. Narayan, Anita Desai, Arundhati Roy, etc.  
- DSC-04: American Literature – 1700–1865 to Modern: Emerson, Whitman, Faulkner, etc.

Year 3: 2026–27  
- DSC-05: Drama – Shakespeare to Modern: Marlowe, Shaw, Beckett.  
- DSC-06: Post Colonial Literature – Achebe, Rushdie, Coetzee, etc.

Year 4: 2027–28  
- DSC-07: Literary Criticism – Aristotle to T.S. Eliot.  
- DSC-08: Linguistics – Phonetics, Phonology, Morphology, Syntax.

3. Electives: DSE-01 to DSE-12

2. ENAEC-04         Communicative English and Soft Skills: Speaking, interviews, presentation, email writing.  
3. ENSEC-01         Creative Writing: Poetry, short story, blogging.  
4. ENVAC-01         Emotional Intelligence: Managing emotions, empathy, leadership.

5. Important Points for NEP-2020 FYUP

1. Multiple Exit Options: Certificate after 1 year, Diploma after 2 years, Degree after 3 years, Honours/Research after 4 years.  
2. Credit System: ∼160–176 credits total. DSC/DSE = 4 credits each, AEC/SEC/VAC = 2–3 credits.  
3. Research: 4th year has a research component if you choose Honours with Research.  
4. Interdisciplinary: You can take Minor from another discipline + GE papers like ENGE-01/02.
